Along the rugged eastern coastline of Bali lies Kusamba, a village where generations of salt farmers have worked in harmony with the island’s volcanic landscape. Here, traditional techniques meet the raw power of nature—sun, wind, and mineral-rich seawater drawn across black volcanic sand. Unlike typical methods, Kusamba sea salt is created through a distinctive, deeply artisanal process: seawater is drip-filtered through brined volcanic sand, naturally enriching it with minerals before being collected and rested on coconut-wood beds. From there, the brine is further dried under the sun, where small, immaculate crystals form slowly under gentle heat and circulating coastal air. This method does more than shape the salt, it intensifies its natural umami and depth, drawing flavor directly from the terroir: volcanic minerals, ocean biodiversity, and the unique interaction of heat, humidity, and wind along Bali’s eastern shore. The result is Kusamba salt: crisp, pure crystals with a soft kombu-like umami, a layered salinity, and a mineral profile impossible to recreate outside this place. Produced using low-impact techniques that rely on natural forces rather than machinery, this salt reflects an eco-conscious approach passed down through generations.
